On Christmas Eve, we set up to bring in all who wanted to join, to help decorate Christmas cookies for Santa, for their families or just for themselves. Sugar cookies in all different shapes and sizes were created. We had lambs, steeples, “snowflakes” and so much more. There were sprinkles, frosting and of course a homemade mess. It was great to see all of the children come down and tell me reasons as to why they wanted to decorate their cookie this way, or what they were going to be doing with their cookie. It was amazing to see kids behaving with such care, who made cookies for family and friends who weren’t able to come on the trip with them, or hadn’t reached the island yet. Some of the kids wanted to make their cookie look like home so that home would be with them on Christmas. The parents mingled and chatted while the children decorated away. The smiles on their faces made every second of being away from home worthwhile. The family on Ambergris Cay was our home for the holidays, and it never looked more beautiful. All of the lights, the Christmas tree in the dining room, the tree out of ornaments at the bar, it all made home seem so much closer. All the effort that went into making the holiday season come together paid off in so many ways.
