Wa Hoo!

The Big Wahoo!

TCSC member Jorge Plaza needed a blue water, big fish fix and found nirvana on a short, but sweet, 3 hour excursion to Phillips Reef with Captains Greg Rahe and Martee Doverspike. Phillips Reef is a 45 minute run and may seem a waste of time for a three hour trip. However, once we got to the sweet spot and put out four lines, we all knew the right decision had been made. Once lines were in, I figure eighted the drop from 700 to 3,000 feet and marked an upwelling pinnacle. All 4 rods groaned with a deep bend, signaling big wahoos had taken the baits. Total chaos ensued as I tried to keep the boat straight while Jorge and Martee did their best to land the fish. In one hour of fishing we hooked 8 wahoos and landed 3. The biggest being 90 pounds and landed by Jorge on 30 pound test line. Incredible for a three hour trip!
